Writing books is a way to socialize

by Mattias Boström April 16, 2011

For me, bokskrivande become a way of socializing. I've hardly written any books on their own, but it has almost always been done in collaboration with others.

With old friends frolic in Lund - Frederick, Christopher and John - I did comic books, "You know you're Swedish ..." and "You know that you are a man ...". A wonderful way to stay connected when we no longer lived in the same part of the country. In addition, we were so used to working in skrivarprojekt with each other - in script groups for countless horseplay in the 90s. I miss our common stuff - we complemented each other very well humor wise. But I'm sure that there will be new partnerships in the future with one or more of these old friends. Perhaps not just in book form, but in some other way. I'm so bad at keeping in touch when I'm not the project employees with some one, so sometimes I simply invent new partnerships for that reason alone.

In Stockholm, I met Martin and Trampe. And it took only a month before we started our first book project, "Sweden's worst album covers." We really had fun together while working. And the launch of the book meant a lot to all of us. However, it was sometimes too long between my meetings with Martin and Trampe in the years after the book came out. Until we started the next book project, "Now, it bloody well gone too far! Angry letters to the Broadcasting Commission, "which came out in 2010. Martin, Trampe and I have talked about other things we want to do together in future and I'm sure it will be something sooner or later. It's such a nice way to socialize.

And in a few weeks, I will out with a book with my friend Per. We became friends in the early 90's, when we two were the only young fans of Swedish crime context. We realized that we probably would have to do with one another in a long time to come. So we began almost immediately to work. With Pers journal CDM and his book publication. With some of my Sherlock Holmes project. The Scanian Detective Society, Scandinavian Forensic Society and with my small publishing company, Mattias Bostrom Publisher, where Per example translated and helped us with all their skills. We wrote up a little book together 15 years ago, a smågalen short novel that was written specially for K Arne Blom on his 50th birthday. Library Service purchased 4 copies of it, so it did get some spread. So there we have continued through the years. Partnerships, ideas for future projects, generally supportive of each other's innovations. If you google "Mattias Boström per Olaisen" you get lots of hits. Sometimes it has been a long time between our meetings in real life, but over the phone and the network can still hang out really well.

It's been great fun over the past year have remotely socialize with Per in the book project, "Bizarre Books". But really, it just felt like normal. Me and Per socialize well, but for some reason it usually always involve a project. And we have not had anything like this, so we made sure to get us one. Or two. Or three.

When I was down there and met with Per in Falkenberg last weekend, we sat in Pers antiquarian and recorded this little talk about the book.

Please follow the publication of the book on its Facebook page . It comes out in bookstores sometime in late May.

Writing books is a way to socialize. And this is certainly not the last time I write a book with a friend. But now I have thought about taking a little break from bokskrivandet and spend a little more on stand-up comedians out there in the clubs and devote myself to other comic projects that will be seen and heard online. I will surely return to bokskrivandet, but right now I need other challenges in my life.

Wonderful! Got me a good laugh when Per tells of not-married-to-with-her-book and elementary schools outdoor days, you learn the know a bit about the future :)

Nice to hear about your experiences to write together. While I write, I can also tell you about the magazine Writing which is a new magazine about just how to write. They might be interested in your story? Watch http://www.tidningenskriva.se !

Erik: Thanks for the tip! Maybe I should investigate. I have some my own approach to writing, a view that might differ from many other writers way of looking at it.
